- JH>Alan - have you ever heard of 1 1/4 meters or the 440 Mc band? Why
- JH>should the 2M repeaters encroch upon the valuable simplex freqs?
- JH>Are these new 2M repeaters offering coverage that no other repeater
- JH>provides? Or are they just duplicating coverage that was duplicated
- JH>by several existing repeaters?
-
- Hi Jeff! Just a side that I see many forgetting is the 6 meter band. It
- is catching on around NC and the coverage is great! Much better than 2
- meters.
-
-
- JH>Which bands, Alan? There's a *huge* amount of spectrum in the UHF
- JH>bands just waiting for operators to move off the crowded 2M band.
-
- That's the case here, too. We've been working on the less populated
- bands and it's great not to worry with the unintentional inteference
- during band openings, coordination headaches, etc.
-
-
-
- JH>>>While your area may not currently have such
- JH>>>problems, it may soon happen, due to the tremendous popularity of the
- JH>>>No-Code license.
-
- There are no available 2 meter pairs in most of NC now...it's time to
- move to other bands to play with repeaters and such. They are a lot of
- fun but not the only method of communication. I can understand the
- repeater owner not wanting to change bands since it would mean the
- liquidation of most of the repeater and starting anew...but he should
- have checked into the availability of a 2 meter pair before he bought
- the equipment. I got myself into a similar jam in 1992 when I built a 2
- meter repeater and found that there were no pairs that fit the plan. The
- coordinating body finally coordinated a low altitude/low power pair for
- the machine. I would have (and have since!) built it for a different
- band had I investigated the situation before hand. I didn't go to the
- simplex-based pairs, though. Is his repeater getting a lot of use??

- I purchased an Acura Integra a few months ago, and am going through the
- same analysis. I don't know how close the Acura and Accord are, but here
- are some thoughts...
-
- I plan on mounting the rig (Kenwood 733 is current favorite, not purchased
- yet) in the dash where the CD player would have gone. It's right under the
- radio. Wires for power might fit through the firewall where the drip line
- for the Air Conditioner go through. The tube is fairly soft. I haven't found
- any other obvious place, short of drilling a hole, and I'm not even sure where
- I'd do that - there seem to be several layers to the wall. The built-in
- speaker probably won't do, so mount an external speaker under the dash on the
- driver's side. Lots of space under there, but no obvious mounting places. I
- expect I'll have to make my own brackets.
-
- The biggest problem I have is what to do about an antenna. The car has a
- sunroof and is a hatchback. There isn't a lip anywhere that is the right
- shape to handle a lip-mount. A mag-mount might work at the bottom of the
- rear window but there isn't enough gap between the hatch and the car for the
- wire to snake through. I'm not yet brave enough to Drill The Hole, either.
- Glass mounting an antenna on a side window was suggested, and shot down as
- beaming RF right into the car (and me!), not to mention the problems with
- feed line radiation that those things tend to have. Any suggestions on this
- topic would be appreciated.
-
- Good luck, and enjoy your new toy!

- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
- I posted a message some time ago and got several responses [thanks] about
- dealing with new car dealers. The question was whether installing a 2
- meter rig [Icom IC28H in my case] would void any new car warantees.
-
- Well, I ended up buying a Honda Accord LX and was able to get a letter
- from the dealer stating that there would be no warantee violation with
- puting in a radio. The dealer had contacted the regional office, and they
- had no record of problems. The only caveat was the battery, which they
- felt might be affected [I guess if your short circuiting it or draining it
- consistently....]. I had the dealer install the direct connection to the
- battery, which makes them responsible for anything going wrong on that
- side of the firewall.
-
- Now I just have to figure out how to mount the thing in the car. There
- is nothing to hook onto under the glove compartment, so I'm going to have
- to get creative. Any ideas would be appreciated.

- How can we identify possible PCB-filled capacitors?
-
-
- As I recall, if there were pcb's in the transmitter it could not be titled to
- you without disclosure of the fact, meaning that if there are pcb's in there it
- is a problem for the station that donated it. They need to contract GE
- Switchgear or equiv. to dispose of it all. Don't assume the liability yourself,

- Actually that sounds very close if not on the money. Check the ARRL operating
- manual or the satellite FAQ over in rec.radio.amateur.space for details.
- I have the info at home - am at work now.
- I've never worked the FM sats cuz my 440 mobile only covers from 440-450mhz. :-(
- But using SSB/CW, on RS10/12 you need to be able to move around a
- bit to compensate for doppler shift. Could be a problem using an xtal
